Ice cream iced coffee with whipped cream is a Slovenian classic. Made with scoops of ice cream, chilled coffee and whipped cream on top, you can now make this European treat at home.
If you sat down at a café in Slovenia and ordered an iced coffee, chances are you’d get this coffee with whipped cream and ice cream. Sometimes they also come with a splash of dark rum hidden inside.
Although cold brew and iced lattes have become popular in recent years, the traditional chilled coffee in central Europe is still this loaded cold coffee with whipped cream, called Ledena kava in Slovenia or Eiskaffee in Germany.
About the recipe
This is a very non-recipe recipe. It’s more of a how to make iced coffee with ice cream at home. To this day, this coffee drink is a special treat for me, that I consider as much a dessert as I do a beverage. It’s comforting, sweet and really quite refreshing on a hot summer day.
Traditionally this is something to be enjoyed with brunch, as a midday treat or even as a dessert on a summer evening. I know I find it hard to resist cold coffee with ice cream regardless of the hour. But you can easily use decaf coffee and not worry if you’ll be able to sleep at night.
Notes on ingredients
Ideally the coffee used should be cold. I like to make it ahead of time and keep it in the refrigerator. To save on time, you can add ice cubes to freshly brewed coffee to quickly chill it. If you don’t want to dilute the flavor, it’s best if you make extra strong coffee.
Any type of coffee works
- Espresso
- Fresh home brewed coffee
- Cold brew coffee, homemade or bought.
- Instant coffee, made according to instructions.
I’m not using any milk or additional heavy cream in this recipe, because I think the ice cream and whipped cream are enough.
However, you can make a more creamy iced coffee. Simply add a splash of cream, whole milk or creamer of choice. As long as the flavors match the ice cream you choose.
For ice cream, the choice is normally between vanilla and chocolate. I prefer coffee with vanilla ice cream because it’s more mellow. But if you want an iced mocha, reach for chocolate ice cream. Any nutty or caramel flavor would work as well.
I use homemade whipped cream. I think it’s superior in taste and it doesn’t deflate like whipped cream from a can does. Follow my recipe and you won’t miss.
If you want a professional look of whipped cream, you can use a whipped cream dispenser. It’s easy to make whipped cream with a dispenser, as long as you follow the instructions that came with it.
What I love about it, is that it keeps your cream nice and ready in the refrigerator, which comes in handy especially if you’re making iced coffee for a crowd.
As a cherry on top, I like to add some chocolate syrup, sprinkles or a dusting of sweet cocoa powder atop of whipped cream. And some wafers, which are also traditionally served at cafés.
