Gilmore Girls Recipe Project STARTS NOW.
Whew! I cannot believe I really just typed that. I have been dreaming of this project, in whatever shape or form, for years. Back in 2014 I bought myself a tiny notebook (it really is tiny) to have as my recipe idea / to-do notebook. Back then I think I was watching the Gilmore Girls for the 4-5th time and I started collecting some of the recipe ideas from the show.
Initially I just hoped I could one day share some of those recipes here on the blog, because some are pretty iconic, but I wasn’t sure if all of you are as into the show as I am. The iconic recipes I have in mind are those connected to the show’s milestones. Like the chocolate pudding Emily (well her maid) made for Rory, or the deviled eggs the girls used to egg Jess’ car, the magic risotto that drove Sookie insane or the graduation cake she made for Lorelai.
I am talking about mouth-watering food that I often wished I could just snatch from the screen and eat myself.
But then Netflix, my favorite thing in the whole world, announced the Gilmore Girls revival. I think I cried from happiness when that happened and I started sharing the news all over social media like the crazy GG fan that I am.
And that’s when I decided to watch the whole show again, not that I really need a special reason to, and write down all the mentions of food and turn this into the best project ever – the Gilmore Girls Recipe Project. Because Gilmore Girls are special to me.
Let’s go back to the beginning, to my first GG encounter.
I had to be about 14 when they started broadcasting the show in my country. It was on on Friday evenings, around 9:30 if I remember this correctly and I watched it with my mom. She introduced me to Grease, Friday the 13th, we watched Beverly Hills and Charmed together, and every Friday we went to the video store to borrow horror movies and thrillers. And naturally when Gilmore Girls came around we had to watch that too.
Just like Lorelai and Rory, me and my mom were a mom-daughter duo. Beyond the blue eye – brown hair thing, that was really the first thing that hit home and pulled us both in, I think. The show was so smart and witty, we had no choice but to love it. There are similarities between Rory and Lorelai and how me an my mom were and what we did for fun, and then there are also definite similarities in the dynamics between Lorelai and Emily, when compared to my grandmother and my mom.
Of course there are differences, there always will be. The biggest ones are that we didn’t live in a house, my mom was a great cook and we were good with pets. Not that it matters in relation to this project, but maybe you’d want to know that.
Sadly, my mom is no longer with us. The first time I watched Gilmore Girls without her was weird and difficult, but still special in a way because I have all those amazing memories of us enjoying the show together. I’ll definitely be watching the revival with my mom in my heart. But this is why this project is so important to me. I just know she would love it. I am doing this as much for me as I am for her, or for us.
And I am so happy I get to share this with you. I’m already having so much fun doing this and I hope you’ll join the party too.
Because this isn’t just a recipe project, it’s a recap project! The recipes will follow the order of the show, starting with the very first episode and ending with the series finale. I’ll post a recap for each episode, followed by a recipe mentioned in that particular episode.
Now, some episodes have a ton of mentions of food, while others don’t or if they do, it’s not something new. I’ll try to pick the most important or special recipes. And if an episode has no mentions of food, I’ll use a recipe from a different episode for that recap. Whatever we’re left with after a year can always be used for Vol 2.
And yes, I will do the same for the revival! Hopefully Netflix doesn’t disappoint and they’ll give me plenty to work with.
What can you do? Watch the show with me! Let’s discuss the episodes in the comments, I want to hear your thoughts! Got a favorite moment or pop culture reference? SHARE IT ALL! I’d love to hear what you think.
The first two recaps and recipes are coming this week, so buckle up because this will be one super fun journey!
